Artist Statement:
Light, how it creates mood, is and has always been present in my memories and in my artwork. Even as an art student, studying photography, my early photos included early mornings on a playground, looking out a kitchen window in the afternoon, just everyday things. During my early years of art school, I was also exploring my faith through reading and art. Photographing churches inside and outside, their statues, grounds and gardens helped me to explore my feelings and beliefs. To this day light and faith still play a role in my art.
After a very long hiatus from artistic endeavors, I picked up watercolor painting in 2015 with a couple years of urban sketching. I began a series of paintings of churches near my home in Charlotte, NC. Ink was included as I liked it's contrast with the watercolor washes and the fine detail it added.
My most recent works are watercolor paintings focused on coastal scenes from the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The element of light in these scenes, whether it be highlights on the ocean or shadows cast by afternoon light, hopefully captures the reverence I feel for our natural world and of family and friends.
My hope is that you find joy, hope or inspiration in these paintings.
